Soils are formed in layers
called horizons. The top horizon is organic, made from decomposed plants
and animals. This is called humus [hyoo-muss]. The sub (below) soils are inorganic - made from rocks that have weathered and broken down to small bits called particles. These are sorted into sizes like sand, silt, and clay. See the chart below to check out how small clay is compared to sand! Soil also has air and water in it. |
